6/27/2023 0 Comments Book i am not spock![]() ![]() The writing is good, and Nimoy's performance is really enjoyable to me. The focus is on Star Trek and his creative efforts in general. He recites some childhood experiences, but doesn't go into so much detail that it might become dull and long-winded (George Takei, take heed). The focus of this book is Nimoy's experience developing and portraying his famous Spock character. There's a lot more to Nimoy than Spock and Star Trek. But I have listened to this book literally tens of times. I wouldn't say I have extreme reactions to books in the first place, no. Which character – as performed by Leonard Nimoy – was your favorite?ĭid you have an extreme reaction to this book? In Rabbit, Run, set during the twilight of the Eisenhower administration, author John Updike closed with a bit of a cliffhanger, leaving us uncertain whether Rabbit would ever stop running, whether he would return to his wife and child and home and responsibilities, and whether she would take him back if he did. When last we met Harry “Rabbit” Angstrom, faded high school basketball star turned aimless young adult, he was doing what he did best: run from his problems. Ten years ago, wouldn’t she have laid them out? Wouldn’t her tongue have cut them down? They’ve told that Janice is running around. The news isn’t all in, a new combination might break it open, this stale peace… ‘Harry, the malice of people surpasses human understanding in my book, and the poor soul has no defenses against it, there she lies and has to listen. Bill McDonagh, Ryan's lead engineer and the sympathetic underdog of the novel, has so many unbelievable English archaisms shoved into his mouth that he ends up looking like a parody of himself. Unfortunately, it's here that the Rapture novel starts to stumble, as few of the characters feel believably voiced thanks to the unusual focus that's put on to bringing their accents or linguistic idiosyncrasies to life. We want to know Andrew Ryan and his anti-cadre in their own words. After two BioShock games, we know enough about those who tore down Rapture, but we want to know more about those who built it up. It's therefore gratifying to see that Rapture, which is written by Bram Stoker Award-winning author John Shirley, explores the origin of Andrew Ryan's aquatic megalopolis. The BioShock universe, with its Randian politicising and cast of crooks and billionaires, is ripe with potential. It may seem like the release of Titan Books' BioShock novel is oddly timed, given how 2K Games is set to abandon Rapture entirely and take to a new setting next year with BioShock Infinite, but it's still an exciting prospect for the literary-minded. BioShock: Rapture Review Platform: Paperback, Hardback ![]() 6/26/2023 0 Comments Kalynn bayron cinderella is dead![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The narrative here felt heavy-handed, as the bringing down of toxic masculinity was more "telling than showing", and the plot plays out pretty much as you'd expect, aside from a really excellent reimagining of the fairy godmother. The idea of a Cinderella retelling that features diverse characters smashing the patriarchy is truly the level of fantasy we need in the world today however, I really struggled to get past the fact that there is hardly any world building in this story, which caused me to feel a disconnect to characters that were keeping me at arms length. I thought for sure that this would be the easiest 5 stars I'd give in 2020, but I think my expectations were way out of line for what this book intended to be. Another reviewer used the terms "predictable, important, and frustrating" to describe this book, and I have to wholeheartedly agree. ![]() 6/26/2023 0 Comments Delly Duck by Holly Marlow![]() ![]() ![]() In addition to creating stories to help children, Holly has helped many adoptees to publish their stories, providing coaching, editing services and cover design for no payment, royalty or requirement to be credited in the book. You can't help but appreciate it, regardless of whether or not you're a fan of guys holding light sabers in outer space. Sure, you might have a few folks avoid it because there appears to be a Star Wars reference on the cover, but c'mon. It's been a while since I found a book that can truly be called genderless (in that it has wide appeal across the board). That's sort of how I approach The Strange Case of Origami Yoda. If the book is strong, the premise believable, and the characters well developed then you're gonna have fans of all sorts, regardless of gender. Boys read Babymouse all the time and girls dig Diary of a Wimpy Kid. "Oh, boys won't read anything with a pink cover." "Oh, girls won't pick up a book unless there's some romance in it." Phooey.
